daily bliss: new books

Two weeks ago I went on an online book buying binge, anticipating this week when classes would be over, afternoons would linger, and I could relax into another world.

These books are a mix of business and pleasure (why does this suddenly remind me of mullets? perhaps because my friends and I have been talking about them all week. don't ask.):

* Two Jenny Crusie novels, Faking It and Manhunting, that I've already read, to re-read for my RWA presentation in July and article for the Crusie essay collection.

* Bram Stoker's Dracula, to establish my vampire mythology for the vampire romance class I'm teaching next fall.

* Beyond Heaving Bosoms: The Smart Bitches Guide to Romance Novels by Sarah Wendell and Candy Tan, to add to my romance scholarship collection and to hold my own in online conversations with other romance scholars.

* Rachel Kadish's novel Tolstoy Lied, which features a 33 year old American Literature Professor as the protagonist.

* The Perfect Scoop by David Lebovitz, all ice cream recipes for Summer of Creativity/Summer of Fun projects.

I also checked out another stack of books from the school library...and will hit the public library in the next day or so. I may review some of the books here...I'm debating whether that would be too much of a departure from my usual blog entries...stay tuned.

  1. I'd love to read your book reviews!

i hit Amazon tonight, and while I'm not done yet, I picked up two books that I've been wanting to read for a while--Devil in the White City, and The Ghost Map. The latter is a history of the 1854 London Cholera epidemic, which sounds terribly academic and/or depressing, I suppose, but I am looking forward to it!

  2. I'm interested in what you think about Dracula. I am reading it this summer, too, just because I read Twilight and want to see where Vampire Romance really all comes from...

  3. what a great Post! I love love love books. I too did the online shopping binge of books. I kinda felt a little guilty at first...but than the books started rolling in and guilt was a thing of the past.

Spring is here and I really want to re-up on the book collection but I'm broke...guess it's time to charm the bf...it's a hard job, but somebody's got to spend his money...hehehe

I love hearing about what books people are reading, even though my list of books to read grows faster than I can keep up with it. I used to love Jennifer Crusie so much and then she lost me with Don't Look Down.

Great books! I love buying books. I just hate that my reading speed has gone way down.

  7. I love the end of semester book binge. I went on a mini binge before the end of the semester, but my favorite thing was making up my summer reading list. The freedom of being able to make my own list is wonderful.
I hope that you'll post your reviews because I'd love to read them. The Perfect Scoop is absolutely wonderful. I have yet to make any recipe from that book that isn't outstanding.
